Not another egg! – 6 Healthy breakfast options

“If I have another egg and gluten free toast, I’m going to develop a blinky facial twitch!”

This is how the conversation started with my friend and colleague Mandy Lehto (@mandylehto) the other day.

She wanted to know other healthy breakfast options. Many came to mind and I share 6 of my favourites below.

  1. Avocado on rye toast – one of my absolute favourites with a bit of butter & chilli flakes
  2. Proper old fashioned cooked oats – with a sprinkle of cinnamon, almonds & chia seeds
  3. Miso soup – certainly a non-traditional breaky (miso is fermented so great for our gut health)
  4. Left over homemade curry – again not one you would think of for breakfast but a nice warming option
  5. Smoked mackeral or salmon – with handful of spinach, sprinkle of seeds, beetroot & drizzle of olive oil
  6. Gluten & sugar free pancakes – great anytime of year! Top with your favourite berries, almond butter or just simply some good quality real butter (find the recipe here)

Enjoy any of these options instead of eggs. Having variety to our foods stimulates our bodies and keeps us interested.

Rainy Day Workout

– Not feeling like going outside in the rain or snow? Use this simple indoor workout as an alternative.

Use the stairs in your apartment or office building.
Walk up 4-10 flights (dependent on availability), do a set of pressups, complete “on the spot lunges” (both sides) and finish with tricep dips.
Do 2-5 reps of the stairs, each time you complete the stairs go through a set of 8-15 reps of each exercise.

I usually complete all 7 storeys of stairs in my block 5-6 times including the exercises after each set of stairs – this takes between 18-24 minutes.

Enjoy the workout…..Let me know how you get on! Here or on twitter @positivelyslim

Life Fitness Announces – TOP 10 GLOBAL FINALISTS for 2015 – PERSONAL TRAINERS TO WATCH Competition

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news!

I had made the Top Ten Global Finalists for Life Fitness’s Personal Trainers to Watch Competition 2015!

Wow! Wow! and Wow!!!

Thank you to all my online readers and social media friends. You all really inspire me to give you the best information and guidance for you to live healthy lives out there wherever you are.

I have congratulated some of the other ten finalists already, those I could find on twitter. I wish them all the best.

What I can say is going through the process of preparing has been excellent. It is like getting ready for a job interview, giving you time to reflect on past successes, jobs, projects and education.

I am looking forward to the live judging event in Barcelona Friday October 30th. We have several tasks on that day which I will keep a secret for now. I will share the equipment we are using which looks like so much fun!

My top 9 healthy food swaps

Some of my healthy food sways to try!

  • Crisps for apple crisps or something similar.

  • Low fat products for real original.
    • (low fat products have high sugar alternatives such as fructose added which are high calorie and inflammatory to the body)

  • Regular yogurt instead of low fat.

  • Whole milk instead of skim.
    • (when milk has the fat taken out, the good parts – Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)-  are being taken away)

  • Butter instead of margarine.

  • Processed food for real food.
    • Cook real food as much as possible for yourself so you know the ingredients.

  • Breakfast bars for homemade or healthy bars.
    • Nakd or Trek bars are healthy alternatives.

  • Cook with Coconut Oil instead of other oils as it has a better response to being heated and keeps its original elemental makeup whereas other oils when over-heated can become unstable and unhealthy for humans.

  • Make homemade chocolate instead of eating store bought as it will have better oils and ingredients.

My Gym Bag Essentials

My favourite trainers for years have been Asics. I feel trainers are a personal preference though Asics have a strong well-made brand and products.

I always keep a tub of lip gloss in my bag along with some Cow Shed or Body Shop hemp hand cream. Left over memories of trying to stay hydrated in cold Canadian winters

almondsA bag of almonds/pistachios are a regular staple in my bag as I love to snack. I sometimes keep a small bag of Naturya hemp protein powder to add to a favourite smoothie post workout.

IMG_4086 - CopyMy favourite all time workout clothing is Lululemon which has finally hit the UK with some London shops. I wear their clothes day after day, week after week and despite being washed continually the colours and stitching stay intact forever.

And of course I keep a small pad lock and my ipod in my bag in case I want to drop into my own gym for a quick 20 minutes.

As orginally seen in my interview with The Fold London.
